From Ceiling to Serenity: Building Healthy Indoor Environments

In today’s fast-paced world, we find ourselves spending approximately 90% of our lives indoors.  The pandemic and recent years have underscored the profound impact our physical surroundings have on our overall well-being. This realization has brought to the forefront the importance of Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), consisting of key elements such as air quality, sound, lighting, and temperature. Ensuring indoor environments have healthy air, effective acoustics, adequate lighting, and thermal comfort is essential to the health and well-being where we reside, work, study, heal, and engage in leisure activities.

Creating spaces characterized by exceptional Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) starts right at the ceiling level. Opting for sustainable and health-conscious building solutions can make a significant difference. A key factor in IEQ is Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), which influences the health and well-being of building occupants. IAQ improvement can begin from the top down, utilizing in-ceiling air purification systems. Research has demonstrated that drawing air upward, away from individuals, for filtration or disinfection purposes can be up to 35% more effective than traditional floor-based purification methods.

Armstrong’s VidaShield UV24™ or StrataClean IQ™ Air Purification Systems will improve your IAQ and represent best practice solutions recommended by the EPA. These systems provide long-term solutions for purifying air from the top down, aligning with the increased Air Changes Per Hour (ACH) ventilation standards advocated by the CDC. By choosing these kinds of solutions, you can create indoor environments that prioritize well-being and health for everyone in these spaces.

VidaShield UV24™ Air Purification System is an unobtrusive, in-ceiling air cleaning tool for improved indoor air quality. The system includes shielded ultraviolet light and filtration which neutralizes 97%* of bacteria, viruses, and allergens. Fitted with familiar ceiling textures for a clean visual, the 2′ x 4′ system operates continuously to draw air into a concealed chamber above the ceiling, treats it with a patented, scientifically proven UV-C air-cleaning technology, and recirculates clean air back into the room. This system pairs with Infill Panel coordinates with Calla® Health Zone™, Ultima® Health Zone™,  School Zone® Fine Fissured™, and Drywall/ AcoustiBuilt® Ceilings.

StrataClean IQ™ Air Filtration System quietly captures airborne contaminants, allergens, and particulates to create cleaner, healthier, IAQ for every space using proven MERV 13 filtration. According to ASHRAE testing, MERV 13 filters are efficient at removing 90% of airborne contaminants, allergens, and particulates down to 0.3 microns. The filter has a long lifespan, and the replacement cost is low.

Common System Attributes

Regardless of the system you choose, they both offer the following benefits:

  • No HVAC system modification needed- Can be wired into lighting system and/or occupancy sensors to maximize clean air when the space is occupied.
  • Unobtrusive, out of the way, and concealed.
  • In-ceiling air cleaning works up to 35% more effectively than floor-based air cleaning and is part of a long-term strategy to improve indoor air quality.
  • Quiet operation.
  • 24″ x 24″ design allows for easy installation in any suspended ceiling system – easy to incorporate in new or retrofit in existing spaces.
  • Energy efficient design uses only 15 watts per hour – less than a traditional incandescent light bulb.
  • One unit filters the air for a 1,000 SF space every hour (1 filter = 1 Air Change per Hour (ACH) for a 1,000 SF space; up to 2 ACH can be achieved at a higher setting)
  • Meets in-room air filtration standards recommended by the EPA Clean Air in Buildings Challenge
